Teachers and Children

Teachers: Work some interesting maritime content into your lesson plans. It will help you deliver the curriculum.

The Merchant Navy Training Board and the Marine Society developed in 2001 a great curriculum resource kit for schools. You can download these below.

There is a great website called Sea and Learn, designed to provide teachers in all subject areas at all levels with high quality, ready-made maritime themed lesson plans fully referenced to the National Curriculum. It allows teachers and their pupils, regardless of how land-locked they might be, to get the maritime bug. Hats off to Portsmouth for this!

The National Maritime Museum is behind a very interesting site called Connecting with Schools. It provides you with 186 suggestions on using a maritime theme to deliver specific subjects and units for each key stage. TIP: Work from the view all resources link on the "Search curriculum" page.

If you are located in the Northwest, look at the Maritime NW Schools Challenge. The themes are trade and transport, environment, and engineering. There are some great prizes for all ages. (Even if you are not in the NW, you can still use these ideas!)

If you are in the Southwest you can participate in the Marine Challenge. This is focused on technology / engineering.

Ports played a vital role in the development of many UK cities.  The Port Cities website explores their impact on UK culture.  It tells the stories of the people who lived and worked in the port communities, the key events that shaped their lives, and the trades, industries and leisure activities that grew up around these.  Five port cities are included.

Children: Want something fun to do? Here are our top tips:

DO NOT MISS the Mary Rose web site. If you don't like this, you won't like anything!

Check out the Time Pirates Adventure.

The BBC website is fantastic - although a little patience is needed to download. Go Diving for Treasure, fight the Battle of The Atlantic, or build a longboat and go on a Viking Quest! There are several games and quizzes to play themed around the Oceans, and our Weather - but only if you can get your parents to let you have a go!

The National Maritime Museum has some games for youngsters: try the mapping game or for older children the Planet Ocean quiz. Click through to the museum website for more activities.
